Default Check Engine Light and Fuel Economy

I was involved in a post last week about the check enginelight and fuel consumption. I had to drive to Fort Wayne, IN yesterday from Indianapolis. I drove to Fort Wayne with the MIL's in place, drove back from Fort Wayne with them disconnected (light coming on about10 miles into the return). Here is what my car did.

Drove Interstate the entire way, with cruise set on 77 mph. Filled up when I left Indy, when I arrived in Fort Wayne I filled up with the Trip showing 134.4 miles driven, and the car took 6.02 gallons. That was an average of 22.3 m.p.g. The return trip, with MIL's unhooked and engine light on, was 136.8 miles, again trying to stay at 77 mph. Filled up at the same station as when I left Indy, 136.8 miles on the Trip, and took 6.29 gallons. That was an average of 21.7. So I did notice a slight degrade in fuel economy, but nothing like others were saying they see (and actually would not even say that was enough to say there was a difference). Just thought I would share what I found.

good post man, some people just refuse to believe that the rear sensors don't affect performance

thank u, i didnt notice a decrease in my gas mileage at all after installing my offroad pipe.i was to cheap to get MILs at the time. after i installed it, i was still getting 23-24 mpg, and that was about 75% city and 25% highway.

Exactly, I could care less how many tests YOU do, or how things should work or whatever, but something in changing my midpipe and catback most certainly DID affect my gas milage greatly. It has nothing to do with what I believe or not, it has to do with what I saw with my own eyes (and wallet). I swapped the pipes without ever unhooking the battery, got very bad gas milage, then a day later I hooked up the MIL eliminators and reset the computer by unplugging the battery for about 20 minutes while I installed the eliminators. After that point my gas milage went right back to what it was before.

So you decide how it happened with whatever explanation you want I'm not saying they do or don't affect milage. It might have had to do with the computer reset, but then why would it make a difference if it's reset and nothing has changed in it's mind (since you say the eliminators tell it nothing). I could care less how they affect what, all I can tell you is that my gas milage went down. Unless you want to tell me a little gas eating gremlin was in my gas tank that day and sucked down at least a quarter of a tank, one way, taking a trip I frequently take (to the hockey game), where it usually doesn't even take a quarter of a tank round trip, I'd say something made a difference.

I'll just leave it at that. I can be completely accepting that the rears do nothing but check for emissions purposes, I'm just telling you, bottom line, i lost gas milage. If you wanna figure out how to give a different explanation, then by all means, be my guest.
