well a buddy messed up on his gauge install and I'm trying to help him out....i guess i will try placing it close at idle and then bounce it off the rev limiter to discover if its right, what do i care its not my motor, and besides maybe if i blow it he'll go pi this time.

Hah, good thing that's not my car or I'd shoot you. Doesn't he know what he usually idles? You can get it withing a few hundred there and worst case scenario it's just give or take a few hundred, that wont make a big difference. Start it up and let it drop into low idle and drop the needle on at about 700-800 and you'll be close enough. My car idles as low as 600 sometimes and as high as 900 if it's cold. If he needs it any more accurate than that then he probably wont be relying on the stock tach anyway.

yeah he wants it dead on... i really don't know why those non pi motors drop off up top pretty bad. My car usually goes around 800 but it also has a tune.

If he wants "dead on", then tell him to go get a real tach. The stock gauges aren't dead on anyway. What is plus or minus 200 RPMs going to affect him? Not one bit. However, sitting there and bouncing the car off the rev limiter just to see how close it is, now that can affect him if it screws something up.

im pretty sure it isnt 6500, cuz my 98 ecu limits me to about 5800-6000
