When a motor is rebuilt, the pistons get bored out to remove any imperfections in the cylinders. The crankshaft is turned, which is basically shaving metal off the journals so that they are all even. Unless something actually breaks all of the parts should be reusable execpt for the pistons, bearings, etc. that have to be replaced due to boring, crank turning, etc.

Yeah, I garaged mine because I couldn't handle the noise anymore. I got about 8k miles from the time I noticed it until it got really bad. Im going to be tearing it down in the next couple weeks.

Just to clarify for the original poster, its the cylinders on the block that get bored, so you have to get oversized pistons to make up for the larger cylinder bores.

well i took my stang to my mechanic, he listened, and confirmed the audible sound, but rejected the thought of a rod knock. He says its coming from the front driver side timing cover, so I think and hope replacing the tensioner/guides on the side will remedy my knocky knock.
In fact after listening to it again, the knock sounds more like a metal flap against metal. So I sure hope my mechanic is right.
btw sound cannot be heard from inside the vehicle at all, nor while driving next to a curb w/ the window down and the engine revving.

good used Gt motor - 500-1500 bucks, or even cobra motor - 1500-2000, but a forged internal rebuild should run you about 3k-3500, and you could probly get your heads ported and polished at the same time for that price... the best option IMO is to get her forged... and quick before you screw the block
