Well if it's burning/ losing the oil, try a 10w30, usually the heavier oil will help slow, maybe stop, the leaks where it's burning away. Depending on where you live, a heavy oil in the winter is bad though. because if it gets too cold, it'll turn thick as tar and you'll really have to let the car warm up a good 5+min. I use a 10w30 year round, my car doesn't leak or burn oil, but I use a synthetic and have always like the 10w30s for higher mileage engines.

may i suggest a oil additive such as engine restore to condition the seals and rings that are most likely allowing the oil to seep through? You can go up to 10w30 and i dont really see any complications, but the additive may attack the problem more directly...that is until you do your swap
