If it's hard to move the shifter around, check your trans fluid. It may be low or need to be changed.

yea maybe u should drain yur fluid and refill. . .this def is a common problem with this tranny, o well as long as it holds up loing enough to put a six speed in

this is kinda funny but when i bought my 88 escort i was bored and and started reading the manual and ran into the 4-speed manual operation. Apparently a lot of fords have that problem, and actually they had a name for it, saying it is normal for it to grind or not go into reverse the first time. What they say to do is put it back in neutral release the clutch, press the clutch again (while in neutral) and try again. It sounds like a long process but actually i tried it on the mustang and it works like a dream. But yea the second option was try 1st gear and then reverse.

when i cant go into reverse i put it in first roll forward a slight bit and put it into reverse works everytime

+1 thats what i have done in all of the manual vehicles i drive (work trucks, etc) just go from 2nd to reverse, lot smoother....

thats what i do. or i just go through the gears and then it usually slides into reverse
