What Gauge Cluster?

I was under the impression that the mileage info was not stored in the cluster gauge, but in the computer? Is that correct? If not, what would be stopping someone from from finding a low mileage cluster and swapping it into a high mileage vehicle and claiming the lower mileage?

Overlays are nice but i need to start off my new motor with a low mile cluster

RE: What Gauge Cluster?
The reason way no one puts a low milage cluster is because its illegal!! You sign a peice of paper that says you have not tampered with milage in any way, and itsmilage is onyour title. Aswell as logged at every tune up and tire store

It does happen all the time, if you have a car with high milage not logged anywhere put a new cluster in with less miles. I am not getting rid of my car anytime soon, thats way i am putting a new cluster in. All am saying is " I am 99% sure that the milage is in the cluster not the ecu"

RE: What Gauge Cluster?
Simco Ltd. makes clusters very similiar looking to the autometer clusters. They run about $260. Search it on google.
Just so you know, the mileage is store in a chip within the cluster.... BUT that chip must be switched to your new cluster in order for your car to run. If you take a lower mileage cluster, and don't swtich the chip it will not work. This prevents mileage fraud.

So, when you buy new overlays how do you know whether or not things will have to be re-calibrated so that the dials read the right numbers? I'd like to just do a simple white overlay but would everything line up the same as the original gauges?

I am just looking for a white overlay that is cheap and simple. How does this look?
