Questions about engine build... for 97 gt.
OK i have gotten a 1997 gt for 1k, it has 121,000 miles on it and the motor is blown, t45 tranny. I am wondering this is the 6 bolt crank correct? also if i go to a forged cobra crank i will need a 8 bolt flywheel, but not a new clutch right ( i have a centerforce sitting around for a 96 gt). I think I am going to try and find a salveged pi motor and add the forged internals, or buy a block ( romeo i suppose out of a 96) and stroke it to a 5.0 with the forged internals.... which way will be cheaper and by how much cosidering I want h beam rods, forged flat top pistons, and a forged crank i suppose ( how much hp will the stokc cast unit take?) Either will start as stock pi heads, with maybe upgraded valve springs and retainers ( possibly a home port job too)....down the road cams. How much am i looking at initially with me putting it together?

If your going to basicaly start from scratch I would get a shortblock from a company like MMR or VT engines, and then shop around local junkyards for a low milage 4.6L PI motor for the top part of the engine (H/C/I)
Your looking at around 3500 bucks fora complete shortblock + the price of the PI stuff.

Honestly I really don't want to have over 4k in a motor. This isn't even my main stang' so erally it's unimportant to me. I wan't it to have some punch, but my major project is my vert. I am now thinking of stock block ( out of it ), stock gt crank, forged h beams, forged pistons, and pi heads ( still upgrading springs and retainers.) Maybe a .020 overbore. Cheap and good for 450 hp on spray i think with cam swap ( at motor).

I'm thinking rods for about $450, valve springs and retainers for about $250, pistons for about $400, new oil pan-seals-gaskets aobut $150, block work about $100, PI kit about $1000. That makes for about a 2500 dollar motor....much cheaper than a 4500 dollar motor. Also, this should be good for enough horsepower on the bottle... probobly install vt nitrious cams down the line.

Ok, so a .020 overbore will give me a 283 right? Called a buddies machine shop, they are going to bore the block 20 over and hone it to a " race finish" which is a brushed cylinder wall as opposed to a blasted one. One of the mgr's of the shop was a low level employee in Richard Childress Racing for 2 years, this is the setup they use on thier blocks. I hope it goes well, oh yeah.... price for a friend $150...not too bad.

This will be the first internal work on a motor that I have done, so I guess we'll see how it goes. Does anyone know where you can find all of the torque specs and sequences for this motor? So does anyone know if there is any difference between any of the cast 4.6 blocks, or would a aluminium 4.6 block also work with pi heads???? I may try to find one cheap and have the motor ready to install before yanking the old plant, which will then become a full forged and bullit motor for my convertable.

Mod motors are not cheap too build. A good source of information is the "How to Build Max Performance? 4.6/5.4 Motors." It's written by Sean Hyland. In there you'll a lot of these questions being answered. You may look into finding a previously built bottem end someone is selling, or buy a built shortblock.
