i'm looking on ebay and they have some 31" spline diff. for pretty cheap. am i correct in saying alls i need noe is the forged 31" splines to finish it off or do i need more?

For the swap here is roughly what needs to be done- but DEFINETLY take it to a shop that is experienced in swapping/working on rear ends (specifically 8.8s)-

remove the rear cover, drain fluid, remove rear wheels, breaks, C-Clips, axles, differential/ring gear. Replace with new 31 spline differential with ring gear installed, put back into the housing, press on ABS Exciter rings onto the new axles, insert new 31 spline axles into tube and into differential, replace C clips, put everything back together, and refill the differential housing. -put brakes and wheels back on.
REMEMBER to check the backlash/shims and measurements of the original gears and re-install to those exact measurements or else you will have rear end whine and clunk.
That is a totally a VERY simplistic preview of what lies ahead so what I would recommend is get a new set of 31 spline axles, a 31 spline carrier of your choice, a rear end rebuild kit, and take it to a VERY good shop and have it done right so you never have to tear into it again- and you can launch on some DRs/Slicks without breaking a sweat.
