TKO 600/500 or T-56

RE: TKO 600/500 or T-56
I always thought the TKOs were stronger. Aren't they a bit cheaper too.
I would go with the TKO. Your car isn't a DD by far so driveability and gas mileage should be a joke[8D]

RE: TKO 600/500 or T-56
Lots of misinformation in this thread.
With only a 6250 RPM redline (stock) and 3.73 gears 4th gear goes to around 120 MPH with a TKO 500.With3.55s your friend should be good in4th to around 130+ MPH. I dunno what your friend has done, but he should not be falling off in 4th gear. The gear ratios on the TKO 500 and 600 are not significantly different than your stock 45 or 3650 trans.
In fact, if you actually look at the gear ratios on all the transmissions, the TKO 500/600, both versions of the 56 than fit our cars, AND the stock 3650 and T45 all have VERY simliar gear ratios until 4th gear. The only real differences are all the other transmissions and the T-56. If you get a "wide" ratio you don't really get anything but an additional gear between 4th and 5th of the other transmissions (4th is 1:1, 5th is .80, 6th is .62 compared to the 3650 with a 4th of 1:1 and a 5th of .62). With the close ratio trans you still get a 1:1 4th gear, but you get a .74 5th and a .50 6th. This is the "viper spec" transmission everyone talks about.

As you can see, the 500 has a more agressive 1st gear than the rest, which I really like for launching. It still puts you in a great spot for 2nd gear (so long as you run a set of 3.73s+)
Simply put though, other than the 500's first gear there isn't a really significant gearing difference until after 4th gear between any of the transmissions. You won't be winning or loosing any races because of any of these transmissions until 120+ (with a 3.73 gear). At 120+ MPH you get a slight advantage with the close (viper) and a bigger advantage with the "wide" as you have a more agressive gear after 4th.
The "wide" will not allow you to run a more agressive gear like the close ratio, as the overdrive gear (6th compared to 5th) is nearly identical to the other transmissions. The close ratio you have the .50 overdrive which would allow you to run a much more agressive rearend gear if you want to and still have a good RPM for crusing.

RE: TKO 600/500 or T-56
I dunno about that.
I just happen to have alot of information about the stuff I have personally done, and that is only because I do a LOT of research before I buy ANYTHING for the car.
I used to not do this, and thats why I ended up with a set of stage2 N/A cams on a FI car, and 3 different junk diablo tunes before I saw the light and went SCT.
The amount of money I wasted in parts/tunes I no longer use... man it makes me sick to think about it. Never again.
Edit: There are only a few questions you should ask yourself when deciding about going with a 56 or a TKO.
1. Do I want to race over 120 (with 3.73s, less with more agressive ratio) MPH in my car?
2. Do I need to run a taller gear than a 4.10/3.73 rear gear?
3. Do I do a TON of highway driving where that super low .50 6th speed on the "viper" will make a difference?
4. If I do a viper trans, am I willing to swap the rearend if the .50 is causing the car to lug in 6th at highway speeds (it might, would be a big diff between it and your stock trans)
If you don't answer yes to at least a few of these questions, IMO the TKO is the way to go. Its a stronger trans with a more agressive 1st gear which is great for cars like ours that are basically built for drag racing only. It offers good street manners, very precise shifting (if you do your part) and its cheaper than the 56 (both because of purchase price and because the 56 is supposed to need an aftermarket driveshaft of diferent length.
I can see the allure of a 6 speed trans, and it will DEFINATLY help out a centri car at 120+ MPH if thats your thing (espcailly with the .80/.62 trans). I just decided I wanted a mainly drag strip style racing car, and that I didn't have any buisness racing at 120+ MPH. 120 is fast enough on the street, and I don't trap over that at the strip anyway.
