Widest tires for stock rims?

Widest tires for stock rims?
I have a '99 GT with stock 16" rims and I need new tires! I dont want to spend an arm and a leg because I will be upgrading my wheels down the road, but I want to get a little wider. What are the widest tires I can fit on my stock 16" wheel? Thanks!

since those are v6 rims i would try posting in the v6 section for a quicker response. if i were you i would just stick with factory specs, the tire profile on those are so high anything wider might look strange, ive heard of wider tires on the 17s but nothing on the 16s but its your car so ill let someone chime in with tire specs

On stock 16's you can squeeze out 235??? probably 225/55/16 is a safe bet!
