Default RE: Tech article sumitting for stickey

I'm looking at doing the swap. I want to run a 4.10 gear set and keep my gas milage. I will need the viper spec trans which is the close ratio t56, from what i see on the t56 link, the camaro t56 was close ratio too, I'm almost posative they are electronic spedo's. Could i get a t56 from a camaro/firebird and use a cobra bell housing? even if i buy the viper trans, will i have to buy a cobra bell housing? thanks

I am unsure if you will be able to use the camaro/LS1 6 speed in the car, I have not been able to find any information on doing this swap so the answer is probably not though.

So far as the housing, no matter what you will have to have a 4.6L specfic bellhousing for your car. none of the 56s (unless used) will come with a bell anyway, you will have to source one from somplace like D@D ect.

Would any of these transmissions be better even for a stock car? My car is going to stay the way it is, with just the exhaust done. Maybe once the TR-3650 junks out? (will eventually the way I drive), then go for TKO-500? It would maybe even be cheaper or as expensive as swapping in a new TR-3650. Granted I am probably making 230rwhp but having a strong tranny is never a bad idea, maybe even for longevity?

Good post. IMO if you're going to get a t56 you might as well spend the money to get the viperspec.

I wish they made a TKO version with a 6 speed; it would be nice to have around a .8-.83 ratio in 5th, then have a .6 highway gear. That way you can run steep rear end gears while topend/highway driving isnt severely compromised.

When installing (which is being done now) a TKO 500 on a sn95, what mods need to be done?

I added information above, but I think you have the wrong idea about the "overdrive" in all the transmissions. Its not like an automatic, aka neither the 45/3650 or the tko's are a 4 speed with overdrive, its a true 5 speed tranmission. Its not going to hurt your tranmission (none of them) to be racing in 5th gear. It will hamper 1/4 mile times (as its such a long gear) but its not going to damage the trans like you can by holding 4th in a auto at WOT.

Would any of these transmissions be better even for a stock car? My car is going to stay the way it is, with just the exhaust done. Maybe once the TR-3650 junks out? All of these transmissions will take abuse and even regular driving longer than the stock 45 and 3650 that comes in our cars. They are simply better built, stronger transmissions. The syncs, gears, internal parts, hell the entire tranmission is simply a better unit than the stockers. If your stock transmission fails and you have the money to do so I would highly recommend going with a TKO (500 on a stockish car)/T-56.

I have no personal experence with this, but it should be nearly identical to the new edge stang install, that is to say new bellhousing, modify the stock transmission mount, and if you go with the 26 spline input replace the clutch with a 26 spline one, synthetic fluid, etc etc. Getting a new flywheel or resurfacing your current one will also be a VERY good idea.

I agree, however the TKO line is basically setup to either support the road race community (with the road race .8x 5th gear verison) or drag racing community. Neither really wants a steep overdrive gear, and unfortuatly I don't think tremec is ready to admit just how ****TY the stock 45 and 3650 are, and how popular a 6 speed verison with a true aftermarket tranmission would really be.

IMO a 6 speed TKO would sell like hotcakes, but it would require a redesign of bascially the entire tranmission, and I think they are unlikely to do so. The 500/600 is a upgrade off the TKO 3550 (not 3650, 3500) line and they have always been 5 speeds. Not only that, but it would cut back on their sales of T-56s... since they build both
