Convertible Rear Window Just Broke???

Convertible Rear Window Just Broke???
This morning I stopped for gas and as I was pumping gas the rear window decided to just crack, and then as the day went on it just splintered to the point of being completely shattered and only held together by the tint, and I freakin ghetto taped it to hold it together so I could drive home without it falling apart...
Why the hell would a Convertible window just break??? I live in Florida and it was about 65-70 this morning, the rear defroster wasn't on, windows were rolled up prior to driving to the gas station... Factory stereo, no subwoofer ever.
Literally parked and coincidentally staring at it when it happened... I can tell from the sound that nothing hit it, it just popped and started to crack, very slowly, but by the time I left work it was COMPLETELY shattered...
Also, about how much will this run and can I put plexy glass instead to save money and prevent this in the future?

you don't just replace the window, its a entire assembly with the canvas around it...makes it more expensive...fun huh [8D]

it was the weirdest thing, I was pumping gas and it just broke, I didnt hear anything hit it, I just heard the windshield start to crack, and it just kept cracking until eventually the whole thing was shattered...
I'm really excited about spending 200-500 because I had a posessed windshield, I really cant think of anything else I would rather buy
