You don't want to do them yourself! They are very particular in measuremnets and specific tools are required. Pay someone to do it and get it done right! The gears will run you $300 with an installation kit (new bearings reccomended with a 99) besides that pinion bearing gets fu.ked up most of the time pulling it off. Labor will run $3-$400 on average. $600 with everything seems close

I've got an 02 gt 5spd, with 3.73s, and the rest in my sig.i raced a 98 cobra with a cai, and some type of aftermarket exhaustat the local 1000ft track and to my suprise i beat him, by about a car length. this was done with my stock wheels and bfg kdws that suck for trying to race, the cobra also had regualar street tires. I would say it will be a drivers game from a roll, Im not so sure on the freeway I think the cobra will shine there.
I like my 3.73s, I do some freeway driving and my milage has not really changed, at first when i wasdriving on thefreeway i was not used to the higherengine noise, now i have gotten used toit and wish i would have gotten 4.10s because really from a stock3.27 to 3.73 is not that big of a change. but something you can fill

I had the same bolt ons on my 96 gt and I added 3:73s and it was like night and day. 373s will bring you right up into your power range.

a 96 cobra is a decent drivers race, but if its equal drivers the GT is going down.
My buddy with a 03 GT, 3.73s, midpipe, catback, and tuner whipped up on a 96 cobra the other day, but I think he would have lost stock.
The 05+ GTs will win every time hands down stock for stock. A geared/exhaust GT should put one down though.
