Catalytic Converter Question
My friend asked me a question i couldnt answer 100% accurately. Hewont take his cats off cause of emmissions testing, so he asked me if these "High-Flow cats" someone told him about actually work. Do they provide any sort of gain over stock cats? I told him just to put them back when it comes time to smog it, but hes lazy. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

RE: Catalytic Converter Question
If his car is a 96 or on, he shouldn`t have to worry about passing emissions unless theydo a visual inspection. 96 and on don`t get a sniffer test. If they don`t do a visual,he can leave the cats off. He will either have to get mils or a tuner to turn off the CEL. As long as the CEL is not on he will pass.

The smell from an O/R mid-pipe will most definitely catch the nose of the inspector...

RE: Catalytic Converter Question
There two components on the Y or H pipe on a Mustang. Precats...and the cats. The precats are just what they sound like. They are justoff theexhaust manifolds and before the cats. They help to pre-heat the exhuast gases when the car is cold to help the catalytic converters do their job more efficiently and get up to temp faster.
If he gets high flow cats put on, dumps the precats, still uses all 4 O2 sensors and lets the car get up to temp before before taking it for a smog check, he should be fine. (Not sure about Cali though their requirements are usually lower than 48 other states. New Jeresy being the other picky one)

fyi, none of the aftermarket midpipes will pass a C.A.R.B.-state's visual inspection, even if they have high-flow cats.

RE: Catalytic Converter Question
none of the aftermarket midpipes have a CARB #, or at least they didn't when I was shopping for one a couple years ago. CARB regulations are also followed by several other states.

RE: Catalytic Converter Question
i dont recall seeing anything dealing with a carb number on any midpipe i shopped for. But not to get off of topic, he is running flowmaster 40's with stock everything else (which i think is a waste) but he is looking at hi flow cats. im just wondering if they do anything for performance.
