Anyone with 3.90's?
I have an 01 GT Vert5-spd with 70k miles. My gears are whining pretty bad and they are stock.. I know what you're thinking, but theyARE whining and ARE stock 3.27's. Anywho, so I have to replace my gears and I was thinking 3.73's all the way, but I'm starting to take some intrest in the 3.90's. Mostly because since I have a vert and it's heavier I was thinking that I'd have a better chance to keep up with the coupe guys that have 3.73's. Just wondering if anyone has them and how you like them. On a side note, would it be worth it for me to go ahead and get the Rear end Bearing kit for my car?? Here's and example:

Thanks guys??

Coming from a guy that just did gears last week you will need everything in that kit except the rear gasket! Throw it away, nothing but problems with those things later on drying up. I don't see how anyone can do gears and not ruin the rear gasket and pinion bearing on teardown! I suppose you don't need the entire kit but here are things you will need.
Ring and Pinion matched set ( I prefer factory Ford for super easy install)
Cruch collar sleeve (must be new cannot re-use old one)
Pinion gasket (the seal at the driveshaft side)
Pinion bearing (this will be destroyed if you try to take it off even if you have proper tools)
RTV sealant for gasket maker
Prussian Blue (gear marking compound)
Shim kit
I did not use any shims in my 3:73 install(Ford Gearset). I cut the bearing off the old pinion and reused the shim that was on ther. The gears measured up damn near close with my veneir calipers. I put all new bearings in and the side spacers remained the same! Took roughly 5 hours from beginning till end!

RE: Anyone with 3.90's?
I had 3.90's... I also have a stepbrother with 4.10's, and had a good friend with 3.73's... all with alike mods (not exactly the same but same basic bolt ons)
The 3.90vs the 3.73 in my experiance was... I had him out of the hole pretty decently... and kept accelerating on him, he had more top end in middle to high 4th gear.. I didn't race in 5th when I had my car...
the 3.90 vs the 4.10... I got taken out of the hole (barely - he also has 18" wheels vs my 275/40-17) - we basically matched gear for gear the whole way until I started pulling on him when we both hit 4th gear...
So.. in my experiance... 3.73 = more top end... 4.10 = more low end (obviously), I found 3.90 was a good low end gear, and pulled well in top end... I felt it was a good comprimise... I would also say - it depends on where you're goin with your car.. if your just going to do this, and that's it - i may even say to do 4.30's [8D]- u just need some good tires with it... but also remember you will need a speedo recal, or a tuner... because your speedo will be off - causing your milage to be off...

I'm going to do more mods, probably eventually just bolt ons and maybe a small shot of nitrous as money allows. I'm also not trying to have the baddest car on the street, just one that can at least take a slightly modded Camaro...

I know that... With his larger wheels, and his tires he was getting better traction - that was my point. That's all.

Just because someone has 18" wheels doesn't mean the geomtry of the gears change! My 275/35/18's are the same size as your 275/40/17's. all within 5 or 6 rotations over a 1mile period. Depends on the tire manufacturer
