Then it is not the speedo gear... it is definately a problem in the gauge cluster. I the mechanical gear probably is just stuck. When driving does the trip meter jump a little? Have you tried pressing the reset button a few times? Look and check those out.

I checked it out and the niether of them move any little bit, I have also tried pushing the trip reset a bunch of times and that seems to do nothing.

something in the odometer broke then. Unfortunately, the whole unit will have to be replaced, as far as I know you cant get a replacement for just the odometer and trip meter.

Nope golfman, if the speedo works without the trip meter, the teeth on the gears are toast. This is a very common problem. In fact, this exact thing happened to me just last year. Left the gas station and pushed the trip reset...bang, nothing moved except the speedo from that point on. When you press the trip reset you are mechanically turning one set of plastic gears that mate to a plastic worm gear that drives only the trip display. Over time these gears will strip and viola, no trip meter ops!
When I say 'speedo gear', I am referring to the small plastic gears thatare connected to the motor that turns the the speed/odo. These little plastic gears strip out pretty easily. The replacements are 1, new, and 2, better quality nylon.
If you go the new cluster setup, it will cost around $100 plus shipping (if you can find one that fairly closely matches your milage)...I've been there! And, you still are just buying another unit with a gear that will most definitely fail on you soon. I would def find the gear set, and go that route, you won't be dissapointed. But, to each is own!
Good luck on whatever works out.
