Car wont hold RPM Past 3500.. HELP!

My car wont hold an RPM past 3500. It sucks! It feels like the traction control is coming on. The engine feels like its hoping around. Then if I shift down to where the RPMs fall after 3500. It shakes and stuff until it comes down under 3500 then it'll run normal until I take it past that again. I think its either a compression problem or a fuel problem. Pleeassee help me out... Thanx

Is the check engine light on?

Is there a way to figure out if it is that?

Nope

If its a fuel problem or really anything with a misfire etc.; a code should definatly come up. It takes about 20 ish miles usually on my car.

Would the check engine light come on if it was the fuel pressure regulator?

Ok Mr. 24 posts.

Check engine light is a huge tool to diagnosing problems. If its on you can use a tuner and just read the code, tells you exactly whats going on in most cases.

compression check would be my guess, but i'm not sure.my instuctor told us that if the engine won't rev past a certainrpm then the valve springs are shot.

Yea... I also think thats what it might be. Looks like I'm gonna be doin a cam/spring swap earlier than I thought.

Yes. Only thing is that you usually have to drive it for a while, might take a while for the light to come on.

It could be the valve springs like others have said, but it's rare that they would break with what you have done unless you have over revved it.

RE: Car wont hold RPM Past 3500.. HELP!

Well... Its got about 125K miles. So its very likely that it is that. Or do you think that the piston rings might be done?

Find a fuel pressure tester and check it......maybe check or change the fuel filter also......My fuel pressure wasdroppingand didnt set a code...but could see it through the scanner......Borrow a gauge orfind someone that can check it....Place I'd start....

Yea, I'll do that. I just changed the fuel filter like 1 month ago. Guess I'll drop by a mechanic and have him check out the fuel deal...

maybe you need compression rings

I hope not... But thats another thing I was thinking it might be. Im gonna see if the ppl at the shop by where I live have a compression tester. Does anyone know what the normal PSI should be?

[align=left]Check your maf sensor (carefully), then check for leaks in you vacuum lines and intake (cai, upper, lower and any connector). If it isn't one of those then check your fuel pressure, plugs, coils and wires. Then compression. Usually a faulty sensor will throw a code.

i still think it's your valve springs. when the engine is spinning at low rpm's the valve springs do their job so i don't think a compression check would do any good. when the engine is revved up higher, the valves are opening and closing so fast that the springs don't retract fast enough leaving the valvesopen too long. just my opinion:eek:

If that were the case wouldent there be potential for valve to piston contact, resulting in a bent valve? Or am i way off base.. But the issue your having to me still does not sound like bad valve springs shurely something else would go bad b4 a valve spring.

Do a compression test and go from there.. i think the number your looking for is 160?

oh yea i forgot about that:D

isn't compression the same whether it's idling or at wot? he said that under 3500rpm the car runs fine and runs ****ty after that. if compression was bad wouldn't it run bad during all rpm ranges? idk what else it could be[:@]

RE: Car wont hold RPM Past 3500.. HELP!

What about a fuel problem? Like a bad fuel pressure regulator or something. It started to do it when I used the cheap ass gas from on-post. (Ft. Knox) I forgot about that part lol... I filled up my tank with that stuff cuz it was cheap, but now I'm starting to believe it's cheap for a reason. I put an octane booster in there so that hopefully the fuel burns all the way. During lunch I'm gonna take it out to see if that fixes it.

I think possibly your cats may be getting clogged, this would cause this to happen after the car warms up
