my head lights dim when i downshift... why the heck would they do that? and another thing, i have a 98 and my battery keeps getting acid build up around the poles, and having the all to familiar weak start. Now is there anyway that i can check to see if my alternator is going bad? or should i just get the battery checked and if it needs replacement then just buy the new batt and forget it?

Take it to Autozone and have both checked for free. Thats what I would do. Maybe your not getting a good connection some where. Check all your grounds and keep the posts clean. A bad ground can cause a slow start or even not let it turn over at all.

I cant stop laughing, no offense. But you explained youre question for youre self. CLEAN THE TERMINALS AND GET A NEW BATTERY.
