Default Diff Cover Sealant

I'll be changing the diff fluid this weekend and I wanted to know what you all use for a sealant. I'm assuming just normal silicone sealant, but just wanted to check.

Also, I know its been a heated deabate about adding a friction modifier to the Royal Purple (or any other synthetic). What have you used, and have you had any problems?

Thanks

I highly suggest scraping the material from the differential until it is a smooth surface and using an actual gasket as opposed to gasket maker or the like.

I'm definitly going to clean it all up. In the service manual it says to use a sealant of some type, so I was going off that. Have you done it either way?

I used a gasket and some of the black RTV.

The gasket was $5 and worth it....

The mechs at the garage I go to used RTV sealant. Also the ford specs mandate the use of the modifier with the recommended fluid. I called the ford service center to confirm the modfier and they stated it needs to be added to prevent problems with the gears down the road.
