I have a 2000 and it says 5w-20 on my cap. I think the 96-99 said 5w-30? My friend said he knows a guy with a '99 and it's different.
Anyway, I use Mobil 1 full synthetic but I heard it wasn't actually full synthetic... idk someone posted on here saying that. I am going to try Royal Purple next time. I had my motor apart for almost 2 months so I will treat it to some Royal Purple.

Just run whats recommended for it on the oil cap. 5W-20 (or is it 5w-30?)

I'm currently using Mobil 1 "Full" Synthetic, but next change I am going to switch to the new Penzoil Synthetic which is getting excellent reviews on various sites.
From what I understand Penzoil is up front about what's in their oil where Mobil 1 is a little more clandestine.
I use a Mobil 1 or Motorcraft filter.
K&N is also a good filter as is Wix.
Fram filters suck with the exception of the X2 model which is good but way over priced.
One thing about the Motorcraft filter, it has the ADBV in the base instead of the head as per the Ford spec (obviously).
(Or the other way around, I forget)
Some people who have rattles on startup claim the Motorcraft filter solves the problem.

I run 5w -30 mobil 1 synthetic and a motorcraft filter. A motorcraft filter is actually made by purolator. It has the "pure-one" internals.. with the regular "L" case. I was told by a guy at hang em high performance to switch to 10w -30. He says the oil pump will get weaker with miles as well as clearances not being as tight as they were when the car was built. He made a good point.. He went on to say that he see's cars all the time especially 4 valves where rod bearings have let go due to this. He also says a little thicker oil will cut down on some of the engine noise the 4.6 makes.

One thing you don't relalize about the aftermarket filters like the K&N and the Amsoil filters, is that they have too much filter material in them. Use the Motorcraft filter! Manufacturer's spend a massive amount of $$ on design for stuff like that so the **** doesn't break down or in the case of a filter it doesn't clog. If you change your oil like you should at 3000 miles or sooner depending on how hard you run you car, all you will need is the basic filter and spend less $$$$$.
You people that through your hard earned money at a K&N oil filter and brag about it call me I have a bridge here in Tacoma to sell you.

There is a reason that these motors call for 5w-20, the tolerances in these mod motors are a lot tighter than the old motors, say a 5.0 or small block chevy, if you run thicker oil it can actually provide you with less lubrication,,, in my small blocks I always used to run 20w50, big no no in these 4.6's. I do agree that after you get up there in mileage, say 50k plus it wouldn't hurt to switch to 5/30 or 10/30 cause the tolerances arent as tight. As for the type of oil, I have always been a Castrol GTX fan, seen my mom's volkswagen scirroco go over 300,00 miles with NO engine problems running that stuff, but I recently switched to using The Motorcraft synthetic blend for my stang, I figure If it's good enough for ford and there warranties, it's good enough for me, plus it is the best bang for your buck in a blended oil, it costs the same as regular oil,,, I also run Motorcraft oil filter. As for your tranny, I'd go with Royal purple and the same in the rear end, don't forget to add a bottle of the friction modifier from ford to the rear end oil.
Just my .02, take it for what it's worth, everyone has there own preferences on this subject.
