No, the heat that is transferred to the pipe from the engine and such will stay there for quite sometime, and will eventually start to transfer that heat to the air passing through the pipe. Even though the air is moving through there fast, it will still get warmer with metal piping than with plastic.

Just get a ram air system and don't look back. You'll like the sound, throttle response, and increased fuel mileage (if you don't keep your foot on the floor listening to the music, anyway).

I feel that the velocity of the air going through the intake negates weather it's metal or plastic, but whatever, I think all the CAI's on the market are way overpriced for what they are. So I just made my own to 1. decrease the turbulence caused by the stock plastic intake tube, and 2. improve the looks under the hood. I found the intake tube either in the classified section or ebay, I don't remember which, Got the K&N filter outta the classifieds, modified the airbox. Total cost was less than $40. It looks good and provides the same benifits that any of those expensive ones would. I also get an awesome WHoosh sound when I hit the throttle you can hear it sucking in the air, sounds great....

Re: plastic vs. metal; it actually does not in any practical sense matter which you select. Technically plastic, with it's much lower thermal conductivity, has an edge; however for real world applications in the relatively short lengths we're talking about this edge has minimal empiric effect. Aluminum (at 250 W/(m.k) thermal conductivity) is probably the worst commonly used material, stainless (16 W/(m.k)) is a much better metal, and plastics (at 0.05 to 0.4 or so) are the best--but again, and even though the difference in the numbers is dramatic,it really doesn't matter for most automotive applications.I personally wouldn't use aluminum though...
