WIll a 99+ IRS fit on my 96 car?
OK i've been talking it over and chewing the bit for a while on this. Will it fit on my 96 or not? My rims are 17x11 AR's w/ 315's. I.ve been told the widths/wheel base is wider and are different, but IDK...

The IRS is somewhere around 175 lbs heaver than the stock solid rear setup. Unless you're looking to be different, or looking to handle better, i'd leave the solid axle in it. It will kill any straight-line times you have.

Not about wieght, I already know that. I'm looking for the best all around driver. The car sees the street more than the track so I'm not worried about the wieght difference. IRS is a better driving rear than solid axle hands down. I can still go to the track and have fun, with everyone else at the end of the day I'll have a better ride home. (michigan streets suck) And yeah it is about being different a little. I've had this discussion with my WH vice pres (doughboy) over and over again. And as for power I'll never be making more than 425 to the wheels anyway.

I am not sure on fitment, I assume it will fit (this is because I see no reason why it would not). Cobras have a longer wheelbase because of the A-arms in the front, not the IRS...
Yes the IRS is heavier but much of that extra mass is not unsprung mass AND the extra weight in the rear helps improve the weight distribution of the stangs anyway... I say YES, do it! I may be getting an IRS setup myself soon too because yes the roads up here blow hardcore.

pain in rear to install, maybe give you a good ride, put real power to the rear-end and you'll break the halfshafts

it may be an old wifes tale. I do know my neighbor in a S/C Vette destroyed his long side halfshaft. we found peices of it, but nothing bigger than 2-3"
if you do the install, put a tech thread up. I'll never do it, but it's interesting to see how it's done.
