4.6L Swap for Cobra Motor??

Have a 99 GT with about 60,000 miles on it. Not a daily driver. Both wife and I want some more horses. Rather than putting on cold air induction, new chip, supercharger, maybe new cam or heads, etc. would it make more sense just to find a used Cobra motor and swap it out? (Could use the GT motor for another project).

I live in CA so would the Cobramotor be able to pass smog? Would the GT tranny, clutch, rear end be able to handle the extra power?

All new cars have to meet emissions standards so as long as its stock it should be fine. There are plenty of people who have added more than 500 rwhp to their GT's and leaving everything else stock. The only thing that would really need to be upgraded is the clutch in my opinion. But if you have the money to do this I would just get a cobra(well depending on the year). You can find a 99 cobra on ebay for $14000. Especially since they already have better brakes, suspension, and clutch. I think the 99's have the same transmission as a GT though. Are you looking for the 99 cobra motor or a 03 cobra motor(supercharged)?

You are not going to make 500hp on a stock motor. If you do its not going to last long. The cheapest way to go is to upgrade your block and supercharge it. You can do that for around $7000. If you try to swap in an 03-04 cobra motor it is gonna cost upwards of $10,000.

Theoretically, a cobra motor will always be a better choice... however the problem is the cost, 4V motors are extremely expensive, often upwards of 9 grand.

Taking your GT Block and installing Forged internals, upgraded heads, cams, fuel system and a clutch can be done for less then 9 grand.

So it's a toss up, unless you can find a good deal on a cobra motor/trans.
