Actually you are incorrect. On some model year motors there is a plastic ring (dust seal) that faces the transmission. I have an 2001 explorer engine (4.6) with one of them in my garage. It doesn't hurt to remove it as Ford did remove it somewhere in the production as not being needed.
I can just remove it?

If it isn't damaged put it back in as it won't hurt anything. If it is damaged leave it out as those things are pricey.
