Default Rear Main Replacement...

I did my rear main last week and it's leaking again. The dust boot that you have to take off firstto get to the rear main is a little tore up. Would that cause my leak? I just figured it was a dust boot and not that important so I kind of tore it taking it off. Any help is appreciated. Thanks...

Dust boot? I think you mean the rear main itself. It's been many years since I replaced a rear main in a 4.6 but it should all be one piece. And if so the you may want to check and see how much end play you have.
Or did you do your rear main bearing and not the seal?

Yeah, the metal plate that covers the back of the engine right behind the valley and down to the bottom of the crank. There's a seal on that and then a seal at the back of the crankshatf. The outter seal (which I assumed to be a dust boot) was kind of punctured when I tried to remove it to get to the rear crank seal.

Ok man you are confusing the hell out of me. There is no dust boot on the rear main. Here is a pic of mine what part are you talking about.

that seal on the back of the plate is just RTV sealant... that is what was on my stock one.. you probably have to take it back off and put some RTV on there...

When I took that cover off, there was sealant on it. I just put it back on with nothing else. Maybe that's my problem... I'll have to drop the trans and take a look. Thanks for the help, guys...

Actually you are incorrect. On some model year motors there is a plastic ring (dust seal) that faces the transmission. I have an 2001 explorer engine (4.6) with one of them in my garage. It doesn't hurt to remove it as Ford did remove it somewhere in the production as not being needed.
