Will slicks break my stock rearend?
Highschool drags are this weekend and I am most likely going to throw my friends slicks on my 2002 gt 5 speed.
so far it has:
upper/ lower control arms
hurst short shifter
bbk lowering springs
mac o/r x pipe
welded in 40 series
I am woried about snapping the rear end when i launch and when I rip second gear. Am I right?
also would unbolting the stock catback benefit me?

I wouldn't think you could gain more than maybe 5 hp with the catback removed.
You can break your rearend with slicks but at your power level you are probably ok unless you try to go out there and do a 5K RPM launch. Take it easy and launch around 3000-3500 and everything SHOULD be ok./.. but anything can happen

Bah, if he is staying around 2500 RPM he shouldnt hurt anything.
A set of slicks isn't going to hook any harder at 2500 RPM than a set of nittos, so long as both don't spin.
Hell, on the stock rear + girdle I am going to be running a set of the MTs and just keeping the launch RPM down, with a LOT more power than he is making. Just don't get stupid and try to do a wheelstand out there

There are no guarentees in life. You could break a stock rear on nittos, but I don't see how unless it was on its way out already. I have beat on mine plenty hard with no problems for probably over 3 years now.
