Do control arms....
also help to keep the rear wheels planted during shifts, thus making chirps shorter
Or do they just help keep them planted on the launch?

They make a differnce with both, but its more significant on the launch.
The real differnce is eliminating wheelhop. With the lower arms on you can also take out your quad shocks for a small weight reduction.
