Time Sert Question
 

Ok I blew a plug and my car is stitting at a dealership. My next door neighbor called me and asked me if I should just do it myself using a time sert. I have heard of these in motor cycle motors and don't know if I can actually do it myself in a 4.6L Ford motor head.

I did a buddies Lightning with the insert and really the only two things you have to be careful of is: Threading it straight and keeping all of the shavings out of your cylinder. You can rotate your flywheel to get the particular cyclinder top dead so that after threading...You can blow some air into the cylinder and get MOST (probably not all) of the shavings out. The only real safe way of doing it is to take the head off and thread it. If the dealer is t rying to hit you too hard....bring it to a shop and get you some ported heads on there. Probably just as much as the dealer would charge for one regular head.....

Well the dealership is doing it for 830 and the time sert kit is 375. I took my heads off in March and got them reconditioned so they are baiscally brand new. Just sucks the plug had to blow out now right after I get my motor back together and the LTs installed.

I've never used them or heard any stories. I don't know about how I even feel about doing anything but replacing the head.You can buy used bare heads on EBay for as little as $150. If you can find them seperatly that would be even better.

Personally, if I was keeping the car I would not do a heli coil. They can last forever but I would not want to be driving around being afraid of it blowing back out every time I got on it.

If I was not keeping the car then who cares.

I would replace the heads if it were mine with stage 2 heads.

Only partially related, and too late for the original poster, nonetheless--do not EVER install (or allow to be installed) tapered-seat plugs unless they are torqued to spec (13 lb.ft. for our 4.6's) with a reasonably accurate torque wrench. [/align][/align]Ihave been surprised by the number "blown out plug" stories on the Mustang boards. I have always torqued plugs (for over 45 years now), and have been called "obsessive" or worse more times than I can count for doing so--however I've also never had one blow out...[/align]
