Default pinging noise?

alright this is not for my car and the car is not a 4.6 but he is a friend and tryin to help out. He just bought a saturn ion redline so it came with a supercharger. I know some people with their superchargers have pinging or knockin or whatever and i know thats not good and the engines symptoms and ways to fix it cant be too different. when he was next to me at idol and slowing down it sounded like someone was flickin his midpipe or like the pinging sound. Is that the negative sound i am thinkin of or something different and if so what can be done to fix it. I will be gettin a s/c soon for my stang so just in case it happens to me i would also like to know. thanx for the off-topic/car help

The car is a 2004 and has 30k on it

If he was at idle it was not pinging. I have a Cobalt SS supercharged very low mileage and it sounds like noisy valve train sometimes but then goes away. If it is pinging or predetonation you would here under load while accelerating.

It also could be the exhaust cooling down.

if it was under a load its detonation. prob needs a good tune to a higher level of fuel. if its at idle like you say, idk. engine knock, exhaust banging something, something loose? just shooting ideas out.

what exactly does detonation mean and will it destroy the engine.
Here:
Detonation occurs when excessive heat and pressure in the combustion chamber cause the air/fuel mixture to autoignite. This produces multiple flame fronts within the combustion chamber instead of a single flame kernel. When these multiple flames collide, they do so with explosive force that produces a sudden rise in cylinder pressure accompanied by a sharp metallic pinging or knocking noise. The hammer-like shock waves created by detonation subject the head gasket, piston, rings, spark plug and rod bearings to severe overloading.

Mild or occasional detonation can occur in almost any engine and usually causes no harm. But prolonged or heavy detonation can be very damaging. So if you hear knocking or pinging when accelerating or lugging your engine, you probably have a detonation problem.

Good explanation but I still have never heard an engine do it at idle.
