my car is making a clunking noise from the engine when i start it and it idles sometimes. My neighbhor who is a mechanic said its the lifters he suggested flushing the oil and letting it try and clean itself out, which i did with no success. Just wondering if anyone had any suggestion short of replacing the lifters.

our cars dont have valve lifters.

Is it just when you start it up? And then when you let it idle for a minute or so its gone? Could be a cracked header and when it heats up it seals itself

If he is a mechanic then ask to borrow his stethascope and heave exactly where it is coming from.

If its the top of the valvetrain then you might have a broken spring, springlock or retainer.

You should ask him when its done if he thinks that you bent a pushrod
