npi means non-performance improved. When the 99s came out they were dubbed Performance Improved 4.6 because it's the same engine with better flowing heads, better cams and a different intake.

If you put these three things from a pi mustang (99+) on your npi mustang then you would be slightly faster than a stock pi mustang.

My advice is to buy the 96, save up and do a pi swap and then you have a faster and MUCH better looking car. Also, it's not really true that 5.0s are cheaper to mod. There might be more parts available for them but to mod a 5.0 and a 4.6 costs about the same amount of money. The 4.6 is an all around better car - I'd say go for it.
