Default Why do shops say 3.73?

I am saving up for my gear install and I was planning on doing it sometime next month. I have called around to some shops and talked to a few people. I got a quote of $300 for labor from one place and I am waiting for a call back from another place.

They all seem to be against going any bigger than 3.73's. I was planning on 4.10's. Why do they all say 4.10 is too high? Will 4.10's hurt the trak-lok? The guy made it sound like that.

shops stray away from 4.10's because of the increased cruise rpm that could possibly damage the engine. They just don't want to be held liable for a broken engine that turns 3000 rpm @ 70mph. Get 4.10's unless you go with a blower.

You won't notice much of a difference going from the stock gears to 3.73. I was trying to decide the same. thing. I got the 4.10 gears and I am glad I did. I had mine done by xxtuning in CT and they told me 4.10 is the most popular gears. Only thing you need to watch with the 4.10 gears is a slight decrease in gas mileage but its worth the extra pickup you will get.

I find it funny when you say, slight decrease in gas milage

when we dont get much of it.

but they are worth it.

I put 4.10's on my 74 charger and I noticed a big difference, now I just have to get them for my mustang.

It is all a matter of preference and direction. What do you like for your car to do? what are your plans in the future? F/I? Nitrous? road race? drag? I chose 3.73's because 1. mine is a stick2. I am planning F/I and 3. It is my DD. These are the kinds of things that i mulled over before deciding.

4.10s are just fine for FI. normally it's people who don't have FI that say don't get 4.10s for FI.
