Default help removing valve springs

I have a 2000 4.6 mustang, and I am having trouble removing the valve springs. I bought the $15 valve spring compressor(the type for use when the camshafts are out)from sears to remove the springs. I don't know what to do once I get the spring compressed. Nothing happens when I compress the spring. Am I doing something wrong, or should I get a different valve spring compressor. I have never done this before, so I dont know how its supposed to come apart.

Once you have the spring compressed push down hard and use a magnet or a screwdriver with grease on the tip and pull the locks out of the retainer.

And remember to put them back in with the wide part at the top! When I built my heads I assembled the first one with the retainers on upside down. I had to take them all off. I used trans lube while assembling the head. It makes it a lot easier.
