Spare Plug Blowout

Spare Plug Blowout
My neighbor has a `02GT, mostly stock. He recently put in new plugs. The other day, one of them blew out of the head taking some of the threads with it. I`ve been reading on the web that this has been a problem on the 5.4L F250 series, & SOME Mustangs. The neighbor said he thought that Ford had added some threads to the heads in `01 or `02. I found that Ford does not admit that there is a problem, & will not help you if this happens to your car. I`m just wondering how many folks have had this happen to their `stangs & how many incidences of the plugs blowing out on the 4.6L there actually are. I talked to the parts guy at Mcafferty Ford, a large dealer in my area, & he said that he NEVER heard of this happening to Mustangs, only to F150`s. I also just changed the plugs on my `00GT, & torqued them down to 14ftlbs. I wonder if I should take the coil packs off & re-tourke them after a month, especialy if my heads have less threads than my neighbor`s 02[&:]

RE: Spare Plug Blowout
Its actually common on Mustangs, i see atleast 1 new person every week posting up about a plug shooting out.
Sounds like your neighbor either over or under tightened his plugs. He can do a TimeCert or Heli Coil to fix it.

RE: Spare Plug Blowout
Happened on mine about 40k miles ago. Me and my father just put a heli coil in there and it holds up strong. Another big thing that people have done is not apply some antiseize to the sparkplugs and then they over tighten them and when they go and change them, good bye threads because of the likeness of the metals, they basically weld togather

RE: Spare Plug Blowout
I've found that it is VERY important to get an air compressor and blow all the grit out of the sparkplug well BEFORE pulling the plug out! If you don't do that then the grit gets worked into the threads when you stick in the new plug & that can affect the threads. And yea always use antiseize

RE: Spare Plug Blowout
I had that happen, 1065 dollars later the pos was fixed. Dealership charged me 235 extra to take my "after market" intake manifold off. It was the after market with the aluminum cross over.
