Default Cam Choice vs. Low RPM Torque

Hello. I'm trying to decide on cams for my wife's 2000 Mustang. I'm relatively new to the Ford Modular engine, having mainly experience with GM LSX engines. However, I'm trying to learn! Here's the details on her car:

2000 Ford Mustang GT
4.6 SOHC engine - stock rods, pistons, crank, no head porting
5-speed Transmission
C&L Upper Plenum
BBK Cold Air kit
70mm Ford Racing Throttle Body
Stock rear-end gears, no suspension mods
Bassani Mid-Length Headers, X-Pipe, and Catback
Dyno: 258.2 horsepower, 292.6 torque on Dynojet 1/10/05
Times: 13.50@103mph

This car is no longer daily driven, yet is not a drag car either. It's a weekend fun ride. My wife would like more power and a nice, nasty-sounding idle. She liked the results that a Crower Stage 2 equipped Mustang had against my stock 2001 Trans Am (he ran 12.74@108 to my 13.007@109). But, I'm no longer stock (heads & cam swap) and she wants to keep up!

Anyway, the VT Stage 2 cams sound real nice, but I'm concerned about the torque curve I've seen on VT Stage 2 equipped cars. Stock, our car doesn't fall below 250 pounds even at 2000 rpm. Most dyno sheets show the VT torque at 200 pounds at 2000 rpm.

So, should I be concerned about the low-end torque? Is the Stage 1 the better choice? Will it lope like the Stage 2? Is the Crower Stage 2 a better choice? What about Comp's 262 or 268?

Also, I've read conflicting stories regarding rpm limits on Mod motors. Can you spin a stock bottom end 4.6 to 6500 rpm without breaking it? We aren't yet prepared to put in a forged bottom end and ported heads. Just looking to pick-up some power and cooler sound. What are your thoughts? Any help is most appreciated!!

Brian

crower stage 2 would be nice. Or the Comp xe270-ah's. Alot of people like VT also.

The stage two thing is something I dont understand. WHO CARES about making power at 2000rpm????? Who races at 2k? Now I know it's NOT just all about max power, but I dont really care about the slope of my torque curve under 3 grand. Just my point of view.

Tell your wife to DOWNSHIFT before she stomps it, and she will never be that low.

U can take your motor to 6500 if u take care of it.I take mine to 6500 almost everyday with 310rwhp and i take it to 6500with the bottle(460rwhp+) but thats not all the time though.I go though about a bottle per month and thats been about 6 months

Well, like I mentioned, this isn't a drag car. Driving around town, you are mostly at 1500-3000 rpm, so the torque is important. Sure you can downshift, but why would you want to if you didn't have to???

if you wanna spin the motor at 6500 and sleep well at night, id recommend some forged internals (crank, rods and pistons) just to be on the safe side. Im running stage 2 heads and cams (both are VT) and my powerband is about 3000 rpms- redline.. thats when the pull actually pushes me back into the seat with the max being around 4500-5000. they do improve your low end, but the 4.6 isnt known for its low end pull (as far as i know) also, with any cams you get, you should run aftermarket springs and you will NEED a dyno tune.

Why would you NOT want to if you could? Cruising around at 40mph in 5th gear, you want to be able to take off like a rocket??? Try SECOND GEAR. lol
