so wait, they give it a small rev, then downshift which causes your RPMs to go up right? well then that means you have to brake so it's not so hard on your engine right? or can you just downshift to 4th, then 3rd, then 2nd while breaking easily?

lol, giving it a small rev is what makes your rpms go up, to match the engine speed to the wheel speed. Breaking is your other option, but that takes a lot longer, basically your options are

- Use breaks and bring the rear wheel speed down low enough that you can put the car into a lower gear without riding the clutch.

- Use the gas and match the engine speed to the rear wheel speed, instead of matching the wheel speed to the engine speed.

Riding the clutch is when you hold the clutch half way out or so, not holding it all the way in while moving.

Thats riding the clutch, it wears the clutch a lot because that sound is one the clutch plate connected to the rear tires hitting the one connected to the engine when they are at different speeds, the plates are matching speeds. Like when you see a jet plane land on a runway, the tires screech b/c the tires are moving a lot slower than the ground when the contact, thats what your clutch is doing basically. If there was a way they could spin the tires up to speed on the jet, that wouldnt happen, not that it would make a differance on the jet, just giving an example.
