200k miles in a new-edge, anyone?
In a recent reply about oil viscosity I made the comment that my wife and I keep our cars for 10 years/200k miles or more, which for the last 20+ years has been the case. Here's "the list":[ul][*]1986 Corolla, purchased new, 325kwhen sold (running well. 1qt/1k miles, leaking more than a bit);[*]1988 Mercedes 300E, purchased new, 190k when sold, (running well, 0.75 qt/1k, no leaks);[*]1989 Celica GT, new, 305k when sold (running well, tight as heck too!);[*]1990 Miata, 185k when purchased, 285k when sold (50k supercharged, running well, 0.5 qt/1k, leaking when sold);[*]1992 Miata, 111k when purchased, 185kcurrently (65k supercharged, runs like a champ,0 qt/1k);[*]1996 RAV4, 33k when purchased,165k miles currently (running well, 0 qt/1k);[*]2003 Mustang GT, 30k when purchased, 47k miles currently (runs great, 0 qt/1k miles);[/ul]
As you can see we wring 'em out pretty well, and with the exception of the Mustang these all have been running on 20W-50 Valvoline MaxLife for most of their existence--I have been using 10W-30 synthetic in the 'Stang as it never goes below 40° for more than a couple hours here (Northeast Florida), and commonly hits 95°+. I just can't bring myself to use 5W-20 in these conditions and my 500-750 miles per week.It occurred to me after writing this that I have not seen a lot of talk about high mile new-edge Mustangs; some of these are 8 years old now and they must be out there, so here's my question:Is there anyone out there with high miles (150k+) on their new-edge Mustang, what oil have you been using, where do you live, how's it running?

i have an intresting question.. how do you manage that many miles that quick? i do maybe 150-200 a week?
also, i know the SN-95 gt's have made 200k miles. and we have a little better motor so i think your car can do it. if its mostly highway, should do it with all regular maintence.

RE: 200k miles in a new-edge, anyone?
Welive in Saint Augustine and my office is in Daytona, near the Speedway, 50 miles each way; also I travel to Sebring, Tallahassee, and Atlanta quite a bit. I am not as concerned about the Mustang lasting--I am an ME (MIT '71) and afanatic fluid changer--however I was curious as to the history here in the Mustang world. I'm relatively new to Mustangs, and while it is not at all uncommon for Miatas to go 300k+ miles without a teardown, I wondered what the common experience here was...

yea, the car should last a long time. with synthetic and such and all that good stuff it will be happy... i may suggest a lower thermostat like a 180... lower engine temps always help engine life.

I have a 159,xxx on my car and the engine still runs like a champ. Burns about3/4 of a quart between every oil change. I am running 5w30 dinosaur oil through it, but I might make the change to a high mileage oil soon. Depends How I'm feeling.

as long as u take care of ur car, as u do already, you should see 200k easy. i think the reason stangs dont last is because everyone slams 1-4 all the time.

RE: 200k miles in a new-edge, anyone?
might be off topic but.....ive been using 5w-30 royal purple...and ive been having alot of problems with it lately....after about 800 miles or so im losing 1qt or so....
not to mention this freaky problem with the oil dipstick.....after just changing the oil and attempting to check the oil....to find out the dipstick is blank??? i had to fight with the dipstick for almost 20 minutes sometimes just to get a correct reading...
rear main is leaking but not very bad (75k milage) garage says its nto enough to lose 1-2 qts
so i stopped using synthetic the other day...and swapped it for 5w-30 conventional valvoline oil....
havent checked the bellhousing yet to see if its boogered up with oil yet but immediatly after using the valvoline....the issues with reading my dipstick were gone....perfect reading everytime (yes i am positive with the RP that it wasnt too thin and clear to tell it was there....the dipstick would be literally clean as if someone wiped it clean ...it would be clean one try...then the next half full....and sometimes full on oneside of the dipstick and clean on the other
so im hoping the regular oil fixes my oil loss problem :-/ so far its fine
got an appoitnement in 2 weeks with evolution performance to have her dynoed....ill post results too
