Default Avoid spilling oil on steering rack?

Anyone managed to figure out a way to avoid covering the steering rack w/oil when changing the oil filter? At this point I've given up and just accepted that there will be a cleanup involved.

you could try taking an old washer fluid bottle and cutting the bottom off and let the oil drain out the top. never tried it on this car but have on others.

I have a piece of metal roof flashing thats bent in a slight "V" that I slip under the filter and it directs the oil right into the drain pan, no fuss, no muss. You could probably use a piece of heavy cardboard too, good luck.

Remove the steering rack?[&:]

Seriously, I just clean up the mess with my pressure washer after each oil change.

I have a small hose fitting that I've managed to get to the same size as the hole and there is a smaller ring inside of it that fits perfectly with the bolt, so I just loosen the bolt and shove the ring over the bolt and start hand loosening like normal. I also used a pump before, and pumped the oil out from the top

I punch a hole in the filter and let most of the oil drain out before removing it--still a bit messy though, a disposable diaper works well to absorb and direct the flow, and keep oil off of the running gear...

That's how I do it.
Works great!

I use those FedEX envelopes that my office seems to have an endless supply of
