mobil 1 is no longer a fully synthetic oil... they only advertise it. It is never too late to make the switch, just be careful if your going with different weights and viscosities. I am using either amsoil or royal purple depending on if i can get it cheaper online or at the local kragen/pep boys/autozone

If you insists upon spending a lot more money for oil then go for it, however none of the boutique brands (RP, Redline, or Spamsoil) have any magical properties that will make more power (other than the fact that any clean oil will make more power than dirty oil), or make your engine last longer.Buy a name brand oil (synthetic if you like), change it at 2000 to 2500 mile intervals, and you'll be good to go for a long time. Even the Walmart and FLAPS store brands changed frequently are better than trying to wring 5000 to 7500+ miles out of the desginer label stuff...

A good filter is a must and IMHO that means no FRAM, except MAYBE the top model which isn't TOO bad...
Wix/K&N/Mobil 1/Pure One or Ford Motorcraft amongst others.
That being said, my Mustang gets synthetic because I tend to drive it harder.
I was using Mobil 1 but since learning it is no longer a Group IV "full synthetic" I have switched to Penzoil Platinum which is getting very good reviews over on bobstheoilguy site. It's made by Shell which also makes the highly regarded, but little known, Rotella brand.
What gets me about these extended oil products/changes is yea, the oil may hold up but what about the filter?
Anyone who has ever changed an oil filter with a lot of miles on it knows that it is heavy and more than likely has gone into
bypass mode a long time ago.
So what are you gaining with these oils?
Nothing but headaches IMHO.
NOTE: The oils for higher mileage cars are a different animal and are good for that application. I am talking about "extended life" motor oils or the practice of long interval oil changes just because the manufacturer says the oil last xxxyyy miles.
