Default Rod Knock

I was driving on the highway when I heard a knocking sound in my 97 GT. I put the car in nuetral and the sound went away. I notice when I drive it starts knocking at the shift point, usually around 2500-3000 RPM. I went to Dobbs and they said it was the rods knocking but no other information. Not really sure what to think, I thought if the rods knock it would be all the time not just at the shift points. Any advice?

Normally it occurs in the upper rpm range, 2500 and up(of course depending on how bad its messed up).If you rev it up higher do it get progressively worse? If so yea your motor is not having a good day. SOrry man! Looks like it is time for4V swap!

I had the same thing and I tried putting better gas in it and since then I have not heard a sound. I always thought thatit didn't matter but with the heat of summer and the crappy gas I guess it is worth the extra couple of bucks to put the good stuff in.
