Default stock air box removal?

can you just remove the stock airbox on a 99-04 gt, exposing the filter making a "homemade" cai? i'm not sure if the cone attaches to the airbox, but anyone do something similar to this?

Yeah theres two places you can do that either go to ebay, http://motors.search.ebay.com/Mustan...r_W0QQfromZR40or mustangworld.com and go to the how to's and they have a setup for a homemade CAI. im going to buy a ebay one and get a 9" K&N filter like the cobra's lol more for looks.

if you remove the air box and leave the filter sitting in the engine bay, you will be sucking hot air in instead of cold air from the fender that you get with the stock air box. So leave the box on unless you have a heat shield for it.

i moved the filter a bit so its right near the hole in the fender. There was a major difference between airbox and no airbox.

You got any pictures of your door sills?

Ohhh...and about the air box, its worth a try. Worst case scenario you have to put it back on.

+1The OEM intake is a CAI, and a pretty good one at that. All that removing the airbox will accomplish is to turn apretty good CAI into a HAI. Take the silencer off if you like, but there's little to no HP to be had from any modifications to the OEM intake--or for that matter from any intake mods or aftermarket intake.Keep in mind that even at WOT the air goes through an 80 mm hole partially blocked by a stick (the MAF), and then through a 65 mm hole with a 5/16" rod running through the middle. The stock airbox and filter can flow more than enough air to supply what's needed...
