Default MAF??

Ive seen some threads with people talking about 80mm MAF and things. What exactly is a MAF and what is it used for?? Thanks for the help.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I believe it stands for mass air flow and basically it is a small sensorthat tells the engine computer how much air is going into the engine and adjusts for the proper air/fuel ratio. Getting a larger MAF would, then, tell the computer to send more fuel to the engine.

A larger maf doens't tell the computer to send more fuel.

The only reason to upgrade your MAF is if its pegging due to the amount of airflow coming in or if its causinga restriction (by size) of the airflow.

Its not nessicarry to replace the MAF unless you either build the engine (shortblock, heads, cams, intake) or go FI. Before that, you simply cannot flow enough air to peg the maf or cause it to be any sort of restriction.

So the people with basically stock motors who upgrade to larger mafs are wasting their time?

Yup...Also, if you install a larger MAF the PCM needs to be returned or it will actually supply less fuel. The MAF measures how much air is flowing through it as a function of the velocity of the flow*--"X" amount of air (mass) flowing through a larger hole (bigger MAF) will have a lower velocity and be interpreted by the "old" tune to be less air= less fuel...------------------------*-It actually records the amount of current necessary to keep a wire heated to 200°C over the incoming air temperature, this current is converted to a voltage and supplied to the PCM as an indicator of the amount of air flowing into the engine. It should be obvious that lower air velocity will remove less heat from the wire than will a higher velocity flow, and thus require less current to keep the wire heated to 200°C over the ambient temp.
