Does anyone have a HOW TO install 4:10 gears on a 2001 GT?
Hello,
I bought some ford racing 4:10 gears and was wondering if anyone has gone through the installation themselves. I get mixed answers when it comes to gears and most of the people recommend they get done by a pro. I am no auto mechanic but I do have extensive experience. These will go into my 2001 GT which I believe is running stock gears. Any help or comments would be appreciated, thanks .

I just did a google search on "ford 8.8 gear install" and got 64,500 hits--pick 4 or 5 and read up on the process. If you still want to do it go for it, it's not rocket science however you do need a decent set of calipers anda dial indicator, a torque wrench, and a 6-12 ton press or access to one. I rented a lift and shop facilities in Daytona when I did mine; $150 for using the bay, press, air tools, gear oil/FM,and having another set of hands when needed...

Theres not many people around here who have done a gear install. Ive tried it twice, and screwed it up twice. Its really not hard getting the old partsout and the new parts in, its getting it shimmed right thats the problem. If you dont have all the right tools, then something is going to be off, and just a little off can destroy your gears.
I wouldnt recommend it unless you know someone thats installed gears before that can help.

+1 for having it professionally done. I have done two cars ( mine and a buddies) on mine which I did first I had some whine due to setting the pinion too deep, fixed it and has been good since. My buddies went easier being I had done one before. One thing I have used is the FRPP, I hear that some of the others are harder to set up....I don't know this for a fact, but I tried to avoid any extra problems by listening to the warnings.

I'll probably be tackling mine next week. I have no experience, but i'm not worried. Bought all the tools i'll need for a complete rear end rebuild. Still debating on going with 3.73 gears or keeping the stock ones. I'll let ya know how it goes.

Or I spent 175 to have them install it for me, while i watched, lol....
If you've never done it, or witnessed one being done before - don't do it. If you have someone that can supervise you - that's one thing. but don't go into it blind....
