I was in the same boat...I test drove a 98 cobra 5spd with 3.73's and flows..and for 9500.00 with 63k miles. But ,,had been owned the last 4 years by a 21 year old kid...I eventually found a lady driven, highway mileage(120k) 99 gt,,unmolested (with all the maintenance records)(not even a k&n)for 4500.00.....I've spentless than 4500.00 in mods..... helluva lot more gt motors in the scrap yard than 4v's.....But ...H.P potential will always go to the 4v....So,,,test drive both, get a insurance quote,,and make your own decision.

Gotta go with the Cobra....they are more rare, have more hp, suspension is better, and respond better to mods. It's just overall a better car than the GT.

You may spend more for mods for the COBRA but taht single little mod will give you a bigger gain on the COBRA then if you put that same thing on the GT. Go with the COBRA. I was about to buy a 04 COmp Orange GT then I found my car. Im am very pleased. To the wheels the COBRAS do not make 306rwhp. They make 306 bhp(to the crank). I gained 20 horsepower by just a mac offorad h pipe, flowmaster catback, and sum stupid little K&N filter thing that replaced my stock airbox.

except for the boss 429
get the gt, first off stock for stock they are only .2 behind the cobra in 1/4 mile, the cobra looks a hundred times better and sounds a hundred times better but is only slightly faster in the quarter mile. They have no bottom end they dont make power until 3300 rpms, if they had a good power curve throughout they would be awesome, but the gt makes good power througout. go with the GT

No sexier mustang than the SN95 Cobra. With the front fascia and the big nostril looking hood... SWEET! That 4v w/procharger, exhaust and a good tune, will put you way ahead of any GT with full boltons! How much is this Cobra anyway??? can't believe nobody asked.....

I was in the same situation last spring. I wanted a mustang, and really like the new edge, but I wanted a fast car stock. I found a 97 cobra for about 10000 with 67000 on it. For a similar new edge gt, the price was about the same. After riding in a new edge gt, I really wasn't impressed with anything about it. I wanted the fastest car I could get, and now I would not trade mine for a new edge whatsoever. The cobra is of higher quality all around, and now I actually like the looks of mine more. Its grown on me, and you dont see a sn-95 cobra EVERY time you turn your head.
And as far as the torque and power shenanigans.....if you take the time (which i'm not going to do because its next to impossible to find) and find two dynos (one of a 97 cobra and one of an 00 gt) tested on the same dyno under the same conditions stock, you'll find that the Cobra's torque curve is WAY fudged up, but it is at all times equal to or greater than the gt's, with hp greater the entire time (and thepower doesnt drop off in the cobra; it pulls all the way to redline. It is a faster car, and I find it hard to believe this post...
"when my 98 gt was still non pi with bolt ons, un tuned, i raced a cobra same year and even same color, and i stayed at his bumper until we both backed off at about 60. i didnt launch to hard, or i'd have been side by side with him." That just makes no sense. Maybe your wing added some horspower, or you had LOTs of bolt ons and he sucked at driving, but whatever.
Anywho, get the cobra. PM me if you want to know more about my opinions...

yeah i deffinetly agree with the last posters comment, especially bout the guy who said his 98 GT stuck with a 96 cobra, the driver must really suck or you got some perf. mods. but either way i'd deffinetly go with the cobra, the GT's do pull harder in low RPM's but don't let that fool you, you'll race one and a few seconds in the race they will come out of nowhere flying past you, just like the old mach 1's with 351's they hit there power in the 3000-3500 RPM range. if you're supercharging great way to eliminate that bad torque curve is to get a twin screw or roots s/c instead of centri.
