I would say that a good rule of thumb is that so long as you do not run anything more stickey than a nitto drag radial you are fine on the stock rearend.
anything can happen, but unless your putting down REALLY big numbers (like 500+ at least) you just can't break the stock 8.8 on something like a nitto drag radial... there just isn't enough stick there, if you launch hard enough to break the stock rearend the nittos will just spin, giviing you a saftey vavle.

If you run nittos on a stock car and dump it at high rpm's you will normaly spin. And if you run slicks ( real deals)on a stock car anddump it at higher rpm's you will bog before it breaks. There shouldnt be any need to have to go 31 spline. A local guy with a hatchback 347 stroker is runningLow 7's at our 1/8th mile track and broke his stock axlesand he just upgraded to a direct fit Moser 28 spline axles, and it is working just fine. One of the axles in my car is worn out so I will be upgrading to some Moser 28 spline axles somethime this week (if theaxles are shipped out and get here in time)

The problem is that you can't just upgrade the axle, you need to upgrade the carrier, thus making it an expensive proposition. Run your 28's until they break, then upgrade them. As mentioned, it takes serious power and slicks to break them.

Those Foxbodies are lighter than us too. And dont forget that their 8.8's are narrower than ours, which doesnt produce as much strain on the axles.

Yea I understand that, what I was getting at is that he will need power and slicks in order to break his axles, ( or if they just get worn out like mine did)and even if he did break his stock axles just upgrade to moser 28 spline since they are stronger than stock. But a stock or nearly stock car will normaly bog before it breaks.

RE: is 31 spline worth my type of driving
Im only putting down about 290hp to the wheels, but Im gonna upgrade anyways, just cause I got a killer deal on a 31 spline rearend setup. Im getting a freshly rebuilt FRPP carrier with Superior axles with 600 miles on them. He wants to sell the whole thing for 300 bucks. So thats really the only reason I am upgrading, and therefore I can run a slick with no worries...
