Default AC Issue

I seem to have an AC issue with my 2000 GT. When I turn the AC on sometimes it doesnt kick on for a few minutes. It seems like it is trying to kick on because the RPM's surge up and down. Eventually the AC clutch engages and it blows nice and cold, but eventually it will turn back off and start surging again. It does this over and over and over. Very annoying when I am driving because when I am stopped and in drive, it will kill the car when it actually engages again after it does the surge thing. When I am in park it doesnt kill the carbut turns off and on. What do you think this could be? Could it be the low pressure sensor? Could it be the CCRM? Any help would be great. Thanks.

If your A/C compressor is actually causing your car to die, you either have an overcharged system which would cause high head pressure in the compressor or you have a compressor on the fringe of failure. You could also possibly have a compressor clutch problem, but more times than not, you would be able to hear if a clutch was going/gone bad. The fact that when the clutch does engage and you are getting cold air, I'd bet the system is over charged or your compressor is failing. Just my guess.

It could be the low pressure switch kicking the car off. If the amount of freon falls below a certain point the A/C won't kick on. If you are really close to that point where it turns the system off it may surge the system and work sometimes and sometimes not. I would get a can of stuff from Autozone or whatever to charge it and see if it helps at all. Thats what I did and now I have A/C!!!!

The low pressure switch disables the ac compressor, not the car. The proper way to find out is to put a set of gauges on it to monitor the pressure in the system, discharge and suction, (high side/low side). I understand that most people do not have access to gauges so If it was my car and I didn't have gauges, I'd take it to someone who does before replacing any parts.

I checked the pressure on the low side and it was like 130 while off and like 35 when on. I think it just might be the switch. I jumped the switch and the clutch engages immediately and stays on. Blows nice and cold. I think I might take it to a shop and have it drained and refilled just to make sure. If that is overcharged how do I let some pressure out?

35 psi is not overcharged and draining and refilling will be a waste.
Was the outside temp around 70-75 degrees when you checked the pressure? The system can run anywhere from 35-40 psi on a 70 degree day and 35-45 psion a 75 degree day.
Sounds like you found the problem by bypassing the switch. Replace it.

Yeah it was around 75 or so when I tested it. Where the hell do you buy one of these switches? I called Napa and Autozone and they told me they dont have them. Do I have to go to the stealership or what?
