ORIGINAL: clean97

I own a 97 GT manual. Is the standard tranny supposed to be kind of clunky. Like I can really feel the gears between shifts. Is this normal for this tranny? I know you are supposed to feel the gears a little which I may not be used to because I have driven other manuals and you do not feel anything. The car has almost 75,000 miles on it.
Mine was kind of clunky when I got it. Also you had to baby 2nd to 3rd because it tended to grind.

I installed a Tri-AX shifter which really helped because it always returns to center and seems more precise.

Anyway,

Recently the transmission started to pop out of 1st and 5th and I was able to drive it that way daily for a few months.

Finally, one day something inside must have failed because it got stuck giving me neutral and 1st as my only options.

Anyway, I had to do something, so I ordered a remanufactured T-45 from smartpartsauto .com, and they were awesome to deal with and claim to use upgraded and tougher parts.

Anyway, I filled it up with Royal Purple Synchromax and now its far less clunky. Actually, its pretty smooth shifting.

So maybe try an change the fluid and see if that helps.

Sounds like it may have a short-throw shifter in it. Is it clunky and sloppy (stock), or clunky and crisp (short-throw)?

I just got a summit racing magazine and I read about the synchromax and I may go out and pick some up. My trans is stock and clunky, I read the other guys responses and it makes sense that they are clunky because the design is old and the trans I have and everybody else have is a basically a old race car tranny design. when it comes time to get new tranny I will rebuild the original to keep the numbers matching.
