Default My Mustangs is WHINNING

I might have spelled whinning wrong.

Anyways....At highway crusing speed I hear a metallic whinning sound. If I give it just a little gas it goes aways, if I let off the pedal it goes away. I checked the Tranny fluid last night after I got off work (car was hot) and it showed 1/2 in the "H" (hot) level, so I need to add some fluid obviously. But could low fluid be causing this noise?

It's got a shift kit in it. Also has 4.10s. I canactually feel heat coming from the hand brake while driving onthe highway. The car itself doesn't seem to run to hot, but it sures seems like the tranny is.

Has anyone else had this issue and know what it could be?

Thanks, Sam

I feel heat from my parking brake too, so that may be a normal thing. Regardless, you should take care of that fluid level ASAP.

the only heat ive felt, is below the drivers seat when you touch the carpet thats above the tranny housing, never felt anything from my handbrake HOWEVER my center console does heat up, and i also feel heat from under the dashboard. the metal whining is never normal, depending on where its coming from, could be your gears (most likely) or a pulley (second most likely) it it comes from the engine, probably the fan or a pulley, comes from the rear of the car, probably your 4.10's

In addition, with a shift kit and higher gears, have you installed a tranny cooler?

Have not installed a tranny cooler. Is it hard to do? Expensive?

The sound seems to be coming from the engine.

its not impossible, but its not easy either. its probably the first single best mod you can do to the tranny. if its coming from the engine, could be a number of things. best bet is to narrow it down, and if youre not throwing any codes, its most likely a mechanical part without a sensor (ie pulley, fan bearing, compressor, etc.)

I'm willing to bet that it's your rear end. I have a manual and I thought it was my tranny but it ended up beingthe pinion bearing in the rear end that took a crap and caused the ring and pinion to mesh improperly. I'd get noises on deceleraion, but when I gave it gas the noise mostly went away. $550 later for a set of 3:73's and a master bearing kit and it's much quieter! Have the rear end opened up and checked for anything unusual.

he just said it appears to be coming from the engine bay.. [sm=icon_stickpoke.gif]

id check your belt, pulleys and fan to start with.
