Default ATTENTION !!!!

Attention all ring and pinion owners (gear)

I have been hearing this weird noise coming from my 4.10 gear and i was just wondering if anyone hears it in theirs. When going down the highway at about 55mph and up you start to hear a humming noise that is coming from the back. Took it to my mechanic had him rebuild the rear end twice. First time we took it apart bearings were all scratched up. Replaced everything except 4.10 (claiming the gear was alright). Took it apart the second time bearings were alright but the 4.10 gears backlash was wrong. So bought another 4.10 and the problem is still there. Yes i did the reccommendations (driveshaft check, axle check, input shaft check,u joints check, axle bearings check, damper check.) So does anyone else experience the humming noise from 55 mph and up. Please Help we are out of ideas.
A guy told me he has a 4.56 in his camero and it makes the same noise. He took his apart but everything was alright. So i don't know whats going on.

some gears just make noise, if their FMS gears and you;ve got noise then somethings not setup right, either backlash or pinion depth. I don't mind alittle noise myself, its not a big deal to me. Mine made alittle noise both times I swapped gears but both went away after a week or so.

I had the same problem. Most people told me some gears make noise, but that wasnt the case with mine. The pinion depth was WAY off. Its fixed now though..

PS, Rack and pinion is steering, RING and pinion are dif. gears.

Well would he have checked the pinion depth if he checked the back lash on the gear?

GEARS SHOULD NOT BE MAKING NOISE! I would hope he checked both. If it's not the backlash or pinion depth it might be the pinion nut. It has to be tightened down just enough so there is no play.....meaning no lateral movement. But do not over tighten it, that is a big no no. My gears made noise because we used a solid pinion spacer instead of the crush sleeve...I'll never do that again. Once I got the crush sleeve in a tighten down just right it made no noise.

MY buddy and his dad are master mechanics. they own a local muffler shop. he has a 69 chevelle and they put 4:30 richmond gears in it. That rearend has been whining for like two years. THey said they put alot of gears in, but richmond just makes a noise. They dont know why

well i have a fms. I had 2 since i replaced the other one. I will have another different mechanic check the pinion depth. And if it doesn't fix the problem then i will just leave it alone.

Thanks for all your help
