RE: just got my GT
I work at a toyota dealership and the newer cars take 5-20w synthetic blend and I believemy oil cap says 5-20w so I just take what I need of that for free and buy a better oil filter like a PureOne Pureolater filter that says it filters out microns of crap for a total of $6.

Motorcraft 5W-20 and Motorcraft filter are very good products for the price. 5W-20 almost always uses a high percentage of GIII Synthetic or better because its very difficult to meet API specs without it. Regardless of whether the manufacturer chooses to market it as a synthetic blend.
M1 is complete waste of money for a 3000-5000 mi service interval.
A good GIV/V Synthetic (Redline, German Castrol aka Syntec 0W-30, Amsoil ASL, Mobil Delvac 1 aka TDT 5W-40, etc) might be cheap insurance for track use. By that I mean road course where oil temperature approaches 300*F not Drag Strip.
In the case of an API/SM GF-4 Oil the manufacturer has very little incentive to make the oil any better than required for certification unless its marketed for extended drains. The tests are tough enough now that Police Cars are routinely run250,000 mi+ with 50% plus idle and pursuit work with 5,000 mi conventional drains or 15,000 mi synthetic drains without issue. Todays conventional oils are better than the synthetics of 20 years ago.
